In 1988, Gregory attended the Clarion Workshop, a six-week seminar for aspiring writers in the science fiction and fantasy genre. During this time, he wrote his first short story, "In the Wheels," which was published in 1990 in "The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction" (F&SF).

While working as a programmer at Minitab Inc., a software development company, Gregory dedicated his mornings to creating internet codes and spent his afternoons in cafes writing his stories and novels. His debut novel, "Pandemonium," was published in 2008 and won the IAFA William L. Crawford Fantasy Award in 2009. His short stories have appeared in numerous anthologies, including "The Best of the Year," both in the realms of fantasy and science fiction.

In 2006, his story "Second Person, Present Tense" received the Asimov's Readers's Choice Award and was nominated for the Theodore Sturgeon Award in the same year.

His wife, Kathy Bieschke, holds a Ph.D. in psychology and is a professor of counseling psychology at Penn State University. Like her husband, Daryl receives a 50% discount on all her consultations. They have two children. Their eldest daughter, Emma Catherine Bieschke Gregory, is passionate about singing, ballroom dancing, playing the saxophone, and rugby. Their son, Ian Bieschke Gregory, is an avid reader, a dramatic actor, trumpet player, enthusiastic gamer, and occasional comedian.

Currently, the whole family resides in a university town in Pennsylvania, USA.
