Dave Attell, an American stand-up comedian, actor, and writer, rose to prominence as the host of Comedy Central's "Insomniac with Dave Attell" alongside Dave Attell.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born in the Queens borough of New York City into a Jewish family, Attell grew up in Rockville Centre on Long Island. After graduating from South Side High School, he pursued a degree in communications at New York University, graduating in 1987. It was during his college years that Attell began honing his comedic skills at open mics.

Television Appearances and SNL

Attell made his television debut in 1988 on VH1's "Stand-Up Spotlight," sharing the stage with notable comedians such as Lewis Black, Margaret Cho, and Wanda Sykes. In 1993, he graced the renowned "Late Show with David Letterman" for the first time. This appearance caught the attention of Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, who subsequently hired Attell as a writer and occasional performer on the show.

HBO Specials and "Insomniac with Dave Attell"

In 1995, Attell starred in two HBO specials alongside rising talents Louis C.K. and Dave Chappelle. He also led the 1995 Young Comedians Special hosted by Garry Shandling and received his own 60-minute special on "HBO Comedy Showcase." Attell later hosted an episode of HBO's "Half-Hour Comedy Hour" in 1997. His first hour-long special, "Dave Attell: Captain Miserable," aired on HBO in 2007. Another special, "Dave Attell: Road Work," premiered on Comedy Central in 2014.

"Insomniac with Dave Attell"

In 2001, Comedy Central launched the late-night talk show "Insomniac with Dave Attell." Attell described the show as " 'Wild on E!' for ugly people." It ran for five seasons.

Other Notable Appearances

Attell appeared as Wavy Dave in the animated series "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist" in 1995. In 1999, Comedy Central featured him in the second season of "Comedy Central Presents." The same year, he joined the satirical news series "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" as a regular commentator, known as "The Ugly American." He returned for the show's final episode hosted by Stewart.

"Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn" and "Gong Show"

Attell became a regular on "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn" in 2003. The show showcased comedians performing at the New York City comedy club Comedy Cellar, where Attell often held court. In 2008, he hosted "The Gong Show with Dave Attell" for Comedy Central. Despite the show's original success in the 1970s, this version aired for only a few months.

"Bumping Mics" and "Dave's Old Porn"

Attell returned to television on Showtime in 2011 with "Dave's Old Porn," a series where he reviews and jokes about retro porn from the 1970s and 1980s with various guest comedians. The show often featured appearances by the stars of the films being screened. In 2018, he toured with Jeff Ross as part of the "Bumping Mics Tour." The tour resulted in a three-part documentary series for Netflix.
