David Freudenthal: Wyoming's 31st and Current Governor
Early Life and EducationDavid Duane "Dave" Freudenthal was born on October 12, 1950, in Thermopolis, Wyoming. Raised on a ranch outside the town, Freudenthal graduated from Amherst College in Massachusetts in 1973 with a bachelor's degree in economics.
Career Prior to Politics
Before entering politics, Freudenthal served as an economist in the Department of Economic Planning and Development and as director of state planning under Governor Edgar Herschler. He earned a law degree from the University of Wyoming in 1980 and practiced law privately.
Federal Prosecutor and Gubernatorial Election
In 1994, Freudenthal was appointed U.S. Attorney for Wyoming by Governor Mike Sullivan, a position he held until May 2001. In the 2002 gubernatorial election, Freudenthal defeated Republican Eli Bebout and Libertarian Dave Dawson, winning 49.96% of the vote.
First and Second Terms as Governor
Freudenthal took office on January 6, 2003. He was re-elected in 2006, defeating Republican Ray Hunkins with 69.89% of the vote.
Presidential Endorsement and Support for Obama
In the 2008 presidential primary, Freudenthal endorsed Illinois Senator Barack Obama, citing his open approach to leadership. With Freudenthal's support, Obama won Wyoming's primary with 61.44% of the vote.
Family and Personal Life
Freudenthal is married to Nancy Dell Freudenthal. They met in law school and were married in November 1980. They have four children: Donald, Hillary, Bret, and Katie. Nancy Freudenthal practiced law privately in Cheyenne and was appointed a federal district judge by President Obama in May 2010.
