Jay Inslee: A Political Journey

Early Life and Education

Jay Robert Inslee was born in Seattle, Washington, to Adele A. (née Brown) and Frank E. Inslee. He attended Ingraham High School in Seattle and earned a BA in Economics from the University of Washington. Inslee later obtained his juris doctor degree from Willamette University College of Law.

Legal Career

Inslee pursued a legal career for a decade in Selah, Washington, north of Yakima. His parents' involvement in the preservation of wildlife influenced his passion for outdoor activities.

State and Federal Politics

Washington State Legislature

Inslee served in the Washington House of Representatives from 1989 to 1993.

United States House of Representatives

He represented Washington's 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 1995. After winning re-election in 1994, Inslee opted to return to private practice.

Regional Director for Health and Human Services

During President Bill Clinton's administration, Inslee served as the Regional Director for the Department of Health and Human Services.

Return to the House of Representatives

In 1999, Inslee returned to the House of Representatives, representing Washington's 1st Congressional District.

Governorship of Washington

First Gubernatorial Bid and Political Comeback

Inslee ran for Governor of Washington in 1995 but came in fifth place in the primary. He went on to become a regional director for the Department of Health and Human Services under President Bill Clinton.

2012 Gubernatorial Election

In 2011, Inslee announced his candidacy for governor once again. He resigned from Congress in 2012 to focus on his campaign. Inslee defeated Republican Rob McKenna, Washington's Attorney General, in the 2012 general election, receiving 52% of the vote.

Administration and Policy

Inslee has served as the 23rd Governor of Washington since 2013. He has focused on issues such as climate change, clean energy, and gun safety. In 2020, Inslee was a Democratic candidate for President of the United States but withdrew before the primaries.
