The Triumph Over Colorectal Cancer: Dave Turner's Inspiring Journey

Seeking a Glimmer of Hope

In September 2005, Dave Turner's life took a sudden turn when he sought medical attention for rectal bleeding, fatigue, and hip and back pain. A colonoscopy revealed a 2-centimeter tumor in his rectum, and subsequent tests confirmed it as colorectal cancer. The malignancy grew rapidly, doubling in size within a month. Dave and his wife, Debbe, faced an urgent search for skilled oncologists.

Divine Intervention Leads to CTCA

As fate would have it, Debbe had noticed an advertisement for Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) during her favorite soap opera. She reached out to the clinic, a beacon of hope amidst the fog of despair. Dave couldn't believe his fortune that his wife's soap opera viewing would lead them to a potential lifeline.

The couple scheduled an appointment at CTCA's Northern Illinois location. It felt like one door had closed and another opened, but the prospect of an 800-mile journey from their home in New Park, Pennsylvania, filled them with trepidation. However, CTCA staff eased their worries by arranging their entire trip, including a driver to pick them up at the train station.

A Sanctuary of Care

Upon arriving at CTCA's Midwestern Regional Medical Center, Dave and Debbe were instantly enveloped by a compassionate environment. Pain management was prioritized, and Dr. Levin, their oncologist, devised an aggressive treatment plan involving radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgical removal of the cancerous tumor.

Dave underwent rounds of chemotherapy and radiation to shrink the malignancy, followed by surgery to remove the tumor and cancerous tissue. Throughout his treatment, the medical staff went above and beyond to instill confidence and well-being. Every member of the team expressed empathy and compassion. Dave also benefited from additional services, such as dietary counseling and consultation with a naturopathic physician.

Home Away from Home

During his chemotherapy and radiation regimen, Dave resided in a nearby hotel that was convenient, clean, and affordable. While the journey was not without its challenges, CTCA made every effort to alleviate his burden.

Today, Dave eagerly anticipates his annual follow-up visits to CTCA. He has gained a renewed perspective on life, recognizing each new day as a gift rather than an entitlement. Every morning before work, he expresses his love to Debbe.

A Champion Against Cancer

Beyond his personal recovery, Dave now dedicates his time as a CTCA Champion. He reaches out to individuals facing colorectal cancer, offering support and encouragement. His message is clear: caring people will be there for you, and there is always hope, no matter how bleak the future may seem.
