David Aebischer, affectionately known as "Abby," is a Swiss former professional ice hockey goaltender and current goaltending coach for HC Fribourg-Gottéron.
Early Life and Career
Born on February 7, 1978, in Bern, Switzerland, Aebischer began his hockey career with HC Fribourg-Gottéron at the age of 16. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a key player for both the Swiss national team and his club team.
International Success
At the 1998 IIHF World Junior Championship, Aebischer made a name for himself by winning the Best Goaltender award and contributing to Switzerland's bronze medal victory. His standout performances caught the attention of the NHL, leading to him being drafted by the Colorado Avalanche.
NHL and Stanley Cup Glory
In 2000, Aebischer made his NHL debut with the Avalanche. He quickly established himself as a reliable backup, helping the team win the Stanley Cup in 2001. During the 2002-03 season, he represented Team Switzerland at the NHL All-Star Game.
Later Career and Coaching
After leaving the NHL, Aebischer returned to HC Fribourg-Gottéron and played for several more seasons. He officially retired as a player in 2016 and immediately transitioned into a coaching role with his former club.
