Early Career and Rise to ProminenceDavid Albelda, a renowned Spanish footballer, began his journey in the vibrant academy of Valencia CF. As a versatile defender, he initially played as a center-back. In 1998, after a brief loan spell at Villarreal CF, he returned to Valencia. Despite facing a major setback with a leg fracture, his determination propelled him back into the starting lineup alongside the formidable Rubén Baraja.
Under the guidance of Héctor Cúper in 2001, Albelda's true brilliance emerged. His exceptional performances in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League earned him widespread acclaim. Following the departure of Gaizka Mendieta, Albelda was appointed captain of Valencia in the same year.
Successes with Valencia CF
Alongside Baraja, Vicente, and Santiago Cañizares, Albelda became an integral part of Valencia's golden era under Rafael Benítez. The team achieved remarkable success, capturing two La Liga titles (2002, 2004) and the UEFA Cup (2004). Albelda and Baraja formed one of the most formidable central midfield partnerships in world football at the time.
Controversy and Return
In December 2007, Ronald Koeman's arrival as Valencia coach sparked controversy. Albelda, along with Canizares and Carlos Angulo, was suspended from training. Due to regulations, he could not transfer to another Spanish club during the winter window, and suitable offers from abroad failed to materialize.
After Koeman's dismissal in April 2008, Albelda was reinstated into the squad. His first game back was a humiliating 6-0 defeat to FC Barcelona, but he later played a pivotal role in guiding Valencia out of the relegation zone. Despite losing the captaincy, he remained a key player for the club.
International Career
Albelda represented Spain at youth level, winning the silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. He made his senior international debut against Liechtenstein in 2001 and played his last match in 2008. His four-month absence from playing time at club level under Koeman ultimately deprived him of a place in the 2008 European Championship-winning squad.
