Biography of David Azrieli
Early Life and EducationDavid Azrieli was a Canadian-Israeli entrepreneur, developer, designer, architect, and philanthropist. He was born in Maków Mazowiecki, Poland and escaped from Europe to British Mandate Palestine during World War II. He studied architecture at Technion from 1943 to 1946 but did not complete his education. Azrieli also served as a soldier during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
Career
In 1954, Azrieli moved to Montreal and established his own construction company. He started by building small duplexes and eventually expanded to constructing multi-unit residential buildings and commercial centers. His company, now known as Canpro Investments, became a leader in the industry. Azrieli later obtained a master's degree in architecture from Carleton University at the age of 75.
Architectural Achievements
Azrieli's notable architectural projects include the Jerusalem Shopping Mall in Malcha, Jerusalem, the Kanion ha-Negev in Beersheba, and the Azrieli Center in Tel Aviv. The Azrieli Center, a complex of skyscrapers located in the heart of Tel Aviv, is both an architectural landmark and a hub for business activities.
Philanthropy
Azrieli actively engages in philanthropy through The Azrieli Foundation, which he established in 1989. The foundation focuses on educational and scientific programs, supporting students and graduates through various scholarships and enhancing architectural education. It also sponsors scientific and medical research. The foundation is committed to supporting Jewish communities and promoting Holocaust studies and awareness.

The Azrieli Foundation operates several specialized projects. The Azrieli Fellows Program supports education and student development. The Azrieli Foundation Holocaust Survivor Memoirs Program collects, edits, publishes, and distributes the diaries and memoirs of Holocaust survivors. This project primarily operates in Canada, with the memoirs being distributed to public libraries and made available online. The Azrieli Institute for Educational Empowerment supports disadvantaged youth, providing them with educational opportunities, improving their social skills, and assisting their families.
