Early Life and Career
David Backes, an American professional hockey player, was born and raised in Minnesota. Beginning his hockey journey at Spring Lake Park High School from 1999 to 2002, he left an unforgettable mark on the school, where his jersey number '5' was later retired and displayed in Fogerty Arena.
College Hockey and the Blues
After two seasons in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Lincoln Stars, Backes was drafted into the NHL in 2003 by the St. Louis Blues. Prior to joining the Blues, he played college hockey for the University of Minnesota. During his third season in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), he was assigned to the Peoria Rivermen of the American Hockey League (AHL), where he finished the 2005-2006 season.
NHL Debut and Breakout Season
Backes began the 2006-2007 season with the Rivermen but was recalled for his NHL debut on December 19, 2006, against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He assisted on Doug Weight's goal in his first game and scored his first NHL goal in the following game against the Los Angeles Kings. In his rookie season, he tallied 23 points in 49 games with the Blues and 13 points in 31 games with the Rivermen.
Backes spent the entire following season in the NHL, improving his point production to 31 points. He also represented Team USA at the IIHF World Championship.
Agent Free Agency and Return to Blues
Backes's contract with the Blues expired, making him a free agent before he signed a seven-and-a-half million dollar contract with the Vancouver Canucks. However, the St. Louis Blues matched the offer, keeping the valuable forward in their lineup. In the ensuing season, he scored 31 goals and collected 54 points, second only to Brad Boyes on the team. On April 2, 2009, he recorded a career-high four goals against the Detroit Red Wings.
Olympic Success and NHL Captaincy
Backes represented Team USA at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. In 2016, he was named the second captain in St. Louis Blues history, a role he held until 2018. During his tenure, he continued to be a pivotal player for the team, excelling both offensively and defensively.
