Early Life and Career
Roger Stone, born in Massachusetts, pursued higher education at Towson State University and the University of Maryland but left before completion. At age 18, he volunteered for Ronald Reagan's re-election campaign. As a young man, Stone worked as a volunteer firefighter and left college to pursue a career in politics. In 1988, he served as a youth director for Senator Bob Dole's presidential campaign.
Congressional Investigator
In 1997, after Republicans gained control of the United States House of Representatives in the 1994 elections, Dan Burton (R-IN) became chairman of the House Committee on Government Reform and Oversight. He hired Stone as chief investigator to look into possible campaign finance abuses by U.S. President Bill Clinton.
By May 1998, Burton faced intense bipartisan pressure, with even fellow Republicans complaining that committee staffers had released edited transcripts and tapes of former Deputy U.S. Attorney General Webster Hubbell's prison phone calls, omitting some exculpatory passages. House Speaker Newt Gingrich called on Burton to seek Stone's resignation. Burton accepted Stone's resignation shortly thereafter.
Trump Campaign
In September 2016, then-presidential candidate Donald Trump hired Stone as his new deputy campaign manager. In November 2020, after the conclusion of the 2020 presidential election, Trump again enlisted Stone to contest ballot counts in states with narrow margins. On November 9, it was revealed that Stone had tested positive for COVID-19. He had attended Trump's election night party, along with others who tested positive around the same time, such as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. At that point, Stone dropped out of the recount efforts.
In February 2022, Stone "spearheaded" a Republican National Committee resolution attempting to formally censure Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for their perceived disloyalty to Trump.
Publications
Stone is the author of "The Man Who Killed Kennedy: The Case Against LBJ" (Skyhorse Publishing, 2013). He also wrote "The Clinton Wars" (Spence Publishing, 1998), a hostile look at the 1998 impeachment of U.S. President Bill Clinton; "Jeb!: The Unauthorized Biography of Jeb Bush" (Wiley, 2015); "The Making of the President 2016: How Donald Trump Orchestrated a Revolution" (Skyhorse Publishing, 2017); and "Takedown: The Attempted Political Assassination of Donald Trump" (Skyhorse Publishing, 2019).
At a Tea Party convention, Stone introduced the documentary film "Generation Zero," which focuses on the financial crisis of 2007–08 and suggests it was caused by the supposed selfishness of the entire Baby Boomer generation. The documentary, which Stone produced for Citizens United Productions, was written and directed by Steve Bannon.
In December 2017, Center Street published the memoir "Let Trump Be Trump," co-written by Stone and Corey Lewandowski. The book recounts their experiences working on Donald Trump's successful 2016 presidential campaign.
