Early Life and Education
Viktor Yanukovych was born on January 23, 1953, in the urban settlement of Olenivka, Stalino Oblast (present-day Donetsk Oblast). After graduating from the Kharkiv Engineering and Economics Institute with a degree in Economics, he began his career as an electrician at a coal mine in 1970.
Career in the Coal Industry
Yanukovych worked his way up the ranks in the coal industry, serving as Director of the Volynska Mine and holding various leadership positions in Donbas coal enterprises. He became the First Secretary of the Torez City Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine and later the Chairman of the Torez City Executive Committee.
Political Beginnings
In 1990, Yanukovych became Chairman of the Torez City Council. He earned a doctorate in Technical Sciences in 1995 with a dissertation on "The Optimal Development and Location of Mines in the Torez-Snezhnoye Region of Donbas."
Government Positions
From 1996 to 1997, Yanukovych held the positions of Minister of Coal Industry of Ukraine and Governor of Donetsk Oblast. He was elected to the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) in 1998 and served as Secretary of the Committee on Fuel and Energy Complex, Nuclear Policy, and Nuclear Safety.
Minister of Ecology
Yanukovych served as Minister of Ecology of Ukraine (July 2003-September 2003) and Minister of Environmental Protection (September 2003-February 2005) in the government of Viktor Yanukovych.
Membership in Political Parties
