Early Life and Education

André Birabeau, a French artist and ballet dancer, was born into a Jewish family in Kharkov, Ukraine, where his father worked as a tailor. At the age of 14, he relocated to the Palestinian Mandate (present-day Israel). In 1924, he moved to Paris, where he pursued studies in painting.

Ballet and Theatre

André Birabeau was captivated by the art of ballet. He practiced choreography and maintained close ties with Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. He performed in Paris and embarked on a 1931 tour of Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina with his wife, a Russian dancer. Birabeau also gained recognition as a designer for theatre and cinema.

Internment and Holocaust

During the German occupation of France, Birabeau was interned at Camp de Royallieu near Compiègne. He was later transferred to the notorious Drancy internment camp, where he created artworks that are now housed at the Beit Lohamei Haghetaot Holocaust Museum. On September 18, 1942, Birabeau and a group of inmates were transported to Auschwitz, where he tragically died in 1942.

Legacy

André Birabeau's son, Grégoire Birabeau (literary pseudonym Moineau), became a renowned French poet, writer, and filmmaker. Birabeau's artwork, particularly the pieces created during his internment, serves as a poignant reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust and the resilience of the human spirit.
