David Cal Figuera was born on October 10, 1980, in Kangas, Galicia, Spain. He is a Spanish athlete who specializes in canoeing. Cal stands at a height of 183 cm and weighs 91 kg. He competes in the discipline of sprint canoeing, specifically in the C1 event, which is the single-canoe sprint.

Junior Success
Cal's first major achievement came when he became the world champion among juniors in the city of Zagreb, Croatia, in the 1000m distance. He also earned a bronze medal in the same event. The following year, he became the junior European champion in canoeing (C1 500m) in Boulogne, France. He also won a bronze medal in the C1 1000m event. Cal was a reserve for the Spanish team at the Sydney Olympic Games.

International Success
Cal's first international medal after his junior achievements was a second-place finish in the C1 1000m event at the World Championships in Gainesville, United States. In 2004, he set a new world record of 3:46.201 in the 1000m event during the Olympic qualification race. He managed to outperform the favorite, Andreas Dittmer of Germany, by 0.52 seconds, securing the gold medal and becoming the Olympic champion of 2004.

In the sprint event over 500m at the Athens Olympics, Cal once again showcased his talent with a qualification race time of 1:48.397. However, in the final competition, Dittmer finished 0.34 seconds ahead of him, leaving Cal with the silver medal (Cal's time was 1:46.723).

Continued Success
In 2005, Cal continued to excel in the sport, earning another silver medal at the World Championships in the C1 1000m race.
