Biography of David McKiernan
David McKiernan is one of the key figures in the United States Armed Forces. He is a talented leader and strategist, planning all his tactical moves many years in advance. Born in the United States, David McKiernan currently serves as the Commander of the International Security Assistance Force. He has also held the position of Chief of Staff of the United States Army in Europe.
Early Career
In 1972, David McKiernan graduated from the College of William & Mary and then joined the United States Army. He later obtained an advanced degree from Shippensburg University. From 1988 to 1990, McKiernan commanded the 1st Battalion, 35th Brigade, 1st Armored Division, known as the "Iron Knights". In 1993, he became the commander of the 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, better known as the "Iron Horse". From 1999 to 2001, he served as the commander of the 1st Cavalry Division.
Experience and Achievements
David McKiernan gained invaluable experience in the 1990s while serving in the Balkans. In July 1996, General McKiernan joined the United States Army in Europe, serving as the Deputy Chief of Staff. He participated in operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina. From August 1998 to September 1999, he held the position of Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations of the U.S. 7th Army. From 2002 to 2004, McKiernan served as the Commanding General of the U.S. 3rd Army. In 2005, he was appointed as the Commander of the U.S. Army in Europe. In June 2008, David McKiernan was appointed as the Commander of the International Security Assistance Force.
