Biography of David Director Friedman
David Director Friedman is an American economist, writer, and advocate of libertarian theory. He is known as a leader in the field of anarchist political theory, which is the subject of his most popular book, 'The Machinery of Freedom,' released in 1973 and revised in 1989. Among other books written by Friedman are 'Price Theory: An Intermediate Text' (1986), 'Law's Order: What Economics Has to Do with Law and Why It Matters' (2000), 'Hidden Order: The Economics of Everyday Life' (1996), and 'Future Imperfect' (2008).
Early Life and Education
David Friedman was born on February 12, 1945. His parents were prominent American economists Milton Friedman, Nobel laureate, and Rose Friedman, who worked at the National Bureau of Economic Research. His son, Patri Friedman, also writes about anarcho-capitalism, particularly the concept of seasteading. David Friedman earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago, although he is most well-known for his work in other fields of science.
Career and Beliefs
Currently, Friedman teaches law at Santa Clara University and serves as the editor-in-chief of the journal 'Liberty.' In his book 'The Machinery of Freedom,' David Friedman developed a model of anarcho-capitalism in which all goods and services, including law itself, are created in a free market. This sets Friedman's theory apart from the one proposed by Murray Rothbard, according to which a legal contract is initially established between participating parties before the creation of anarcho-capitalist society. Friedman advocates for an incrementalist approach to building anarcho-capitalism through the gradual privatization of areas involving government, ultimately privatizing law and order. He also opposes violent anarcho-capitalist revolution, instead offering a consequentialist approach to building anarcho-capitalism.

David Friedman has long been a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, a society dedicated to historical reenactment, where he is known as Duke Cariadoc of the Bow. He is widely recognized among like-minded individuals worldwide for his articles on recreationalism philosophy and practical historical reenactment, particularly in the Middle East during the medieval period. His works have been published in the collection 'Cariadoc's Miscellany.' Additionally, Friedman is known as a longtime science fiction enthusiast and the author of the fantasy novel 'Harald,' published in 2003 by Baen Books.
