David Gleirscher: Olympic Champion in Luge
David Gleirscher is an Austrian luger and Olympic champion. He is the son of Gerhard Gleirscher, who competed in the 1992, 1994, and 1998 Winter Olympics.
Early Career and Personal Life
Born on May 20, 1994, in Hall in Tirol, Austria, Gleirscher began luging at an early age. Outside of sledding, he works as a police officer. His hobbies include traveling, skiing, and football.
International Debut and Road to the Olympics
Gleirscher made his international debut at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, where he finished 17th. He subsequently competed for Austria in the 2015/2016 World Cup season, finishing tenth overall.
Unexpected Olympic Victory
Heading into the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Gleirscher was not considered Austria's top luge contender, with his compatriot Wolfgang Kindl being the favorite. However, Gleirscher broke the track record in the first heat and seized the gold medal after a costly mistake by German Felix Loch in the fourth heat.
Post-Olympic Success
Gleirscher has continued to perform at a high level following his Olympic victory. He won the 2018/2019 World Cup overall title and took the silver medal at the 2019 World Championships. He also won the 2020 European Championships.
