Josef Isser: Austrian Luger and Bobsledder

Josef Isser was an Austrian luger and bobsledder who competed for Austria in the 1950s. He achieved significant success in both sports, earning multiple medals at the European and World Championships.

Luger

World Championships

Isser made history at the inaugural World Luge Championships in Oslo in 1955. He captured the bronze medal in the men's singles event and teamed up with his sister, Maria, to win the silver medal in the pairs competition. Notably, this marked the first and last time a woman competed in the pairs event at the World Championships.

European Championships

Isser's success continued at the European Championships, where he collected four medals in the luge. He won two gold medals (singles in 1956, pairs in 1954), a silver medal in pairs (1951), and a bronze medal in pairs (1952).

Bobsled

World Championships

In bobsledding, Isser stepped onto the podium three times at the World Championships. He earned a silver medal in the two-man event in 1955 and two bronze medals in the two-man event (1958) and four-man event (1962).

Legacy

Josef Isser retired from professional sports before luge became an official Olympic event. Despite this, his contributions to the sport remain significant. He played a key role in the development of luge in Austria and helped to establish its international prominence.
