Early Life and Education
David Lawrence Groh was born on May 21, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Brown University.

Theatre and Military Service
After graduating from college, Groh performed with the American Shakespeare Theatre. He then studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art on a Fulbright Scholarship. From 1963 to 1964, he served in the United States Army.

Television Career
Groh's television debut came in the soap opera "Dark Shadows" in 1966. His breakthrough role was on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" (1970-1977), which attracted over 50 million viewers. From 1983 to 1985, he appeared in "General Hospital," and in 1986, he starred in the play "Be Happy for Me."
Groh guest-starred in numerous popular television series, including "Melrose Place," "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century," "Law & Order," "Baywatch," "Murder, She Wrote," "The X-Files," and "LA Law."
Film Career
Groh also appeared in feature films, such as "Victory at Entebbe" (1976) and "Get Shorty" (1995).
Personal Life
Groh was an avid collector of antiques and folk art. He resided in Santa Monica with his wife and son. In his later years, he lived in a country home in southern Connecticut.
