Biography of David Guerrero
David Guerrero, born on April 5, 1961, in London, is a British-Filipino advertising executive known for his successful leadership in the advertising industry. He gained prominence as the head of the Philippine advertising agency 'BBDO' and as the creative director during the 'It's More Fun In The Philippines' tourism campaign.
Education and Early Career
Guerrero attended Dartington Hall School, a progressive boarding school, from 1971 to 1979. In 1985, he graduated with honors in International Relations from the University of Sussex. He then pursued a master's degree in Copywriting from the London School of Communication Arts. After completing his education, Guerrero worked for advertising agencies such as 'Ogilvy,' 'BMP,' and 'Ayer Barker' in London. He later moved to Hong Kong, where he successfully showcased his abilities in several advertising campaigns, including one for 'Cathay Pacific'.
Leading Advertising Professional in the Philippines
In the 1990s, Guerrero returned to the Philippines and established himself as one of the leading advertising professionals in the country. He worked for the Philippine branch of the British advertising agency 'Ogilvy & Mather' until 1998 when he left to launch a joint venture with the global advertising network 'BBDO.' Initially known as 'BBDO Guerrero Ortega,' the agency eventually changed its name to 'BBDO Guerrero' in 2008 after Guerrero's partner, Jos Ortega, departed.
Accomplishments and Recognition
Since its establishment, 'BBDO Guerrero' has launched numerous successful advertising campaigns. Notably, the agency is responsible for the tourism advertising campaigns promoting the Philippines. Guerrero led the '#unselfie' campaign in response to Typhoon Haiyan, which garnered widespread attention and participation from both local and international celebrities, including U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
Guerrero served as the first Southeast Asian jury president at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and has been invited to judge various advertising festivals. He has received awards such as the Grand Prix at the London International Advertising Awards, gold at the Cannes Lions, and silver and bronze at the One Show and D&AD. In 2013, his agency, 'BBDO Guerrero,' was recognized as one of the top 50 advertising agencies in the world.
Personal Life
Guerrero currently resides in the Manila metropolitan area with his wife, Angel Guerrero, who is the editor of 'Adobo Magazine.' They have two children. Outside of his career, David is a devoted fan of the English football club 'Everton F.C.'
