His entry into the advertising industry seems inevitable, considering that his father owned a small advertising agency called "David Deutsch Associates" since 1969. Donny started working for his father while studying at university, but their partnership didn't work out. In 1983, Donny was dismissed by his father, and it seemed like his career in advertising was over. However, after a short stint in Los Angeles, Donny returned to New York and asked his father for another chance. His request was granted, and he was appointed as the agency's manager. In 1984, he renamed the agency "Deutsch" and became its head.

Building a Successful Advertising Agency

Deutsch Agency specialized in print advertising, and its annual revenue ranged from 3 to 5 million dollars. Its first major success came when Donny secured a television advertising contract with the company "Pontiac". This partnership doubled the agency's income. According to stories, Donny managed to attract this prestigious client by sending a car bumper with a note to "Pontiac" that read, "We'll cover your rear end." This witty approach, combined with his persistence, helped Donny win over a promising client.

Donny always hired young and energetic individuals for his agency, and their work ethic was a significant criterion for selection. He described his team as a "big dysfunctional ethnic family" comprising Jewish, hardworking girls. Under Donny's leadership, Deutsch Agency became one of the most innovative and creative agencies in New York during the 1990s. Donny's advertising slogan, "Be Real!", set his agency apart from others. While many agencies relied on celebrity endorsements and loud advertising campaigns, Donny emphasized the importance of authenticity.

In the 2000s, Deutsch Agency was sold to the Interpublic Group, with Donny retaining an 87% stake in the company. Despite the sale, Donny continued to lead the agency and remained actively involved in various "non-advertising" projects. He hosted a show called "The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch" on CNBC and served as a commentator on CNBC's "Business Day". Additionally, he established his film studio, "Open City Films", in 2003 and published several books through HarperCollins in 2005.

Donny Deutsch's career has been marked by his innovative approach to advertising and his ability to adapt to changing industry trends. His achievements in the field have solidified his reputation as a successful businessman and a prominent figure in the advertising world.
