David Haines: A Life Dedicated to Helping Others

David Haines, a British humanitarian worker, has devoted his entire life to assisting those in need. Unfortunately, while he was hailed as a hero by some, others saw him as an inconvenience. Currently, Haines is in the hands of Islamic terrorists, and his life hangs by a thread.

Early Life and Career

David Courtorn Haines was born and raised in Holderness, East Yorkshire. He grew up in Perth, Scotland, and after completing his local academy, he joined the army, where he served for 12 years. Even after getting married to his wife, Mary Haines, at the age of 22, and becoming a father to their first daughter five years later, his family did not deter him from continuing his service and his courageous endeavors to save civilians affected by military conflicts.

From 1999 to 2004, Haines collaborated with a German non-governmental organization involved in rebuilding destroyed villages and repatriating victims of the civil war in former Yugoslavia. His exceptional work led to rapid career advancement, and a few years later, he became an independent consultant, actively sharing his experiences by collaborating with renowned charitable projects and organizations. For a while, he provided consultancy services to a production company called 'Astraea' in Croatia.

Humanitarian Missions and Abduction

Three years ago, David Haines traveled to Libya, where he began working with 'Handicap International' on demining projects. After a year, he moved to South Sudan and joined the civil peacekeeping organization 'Nonviolent Peaceforce.' However, the working conditions did not entirely suit him, and he desired a more flexible and short-term contract. Consequently, he joined the French non-governmental organization 'ACTED,' which saved citizens affected by wars, natural disasters, and economic or social crises.

It was while working with 'ACTED' in Syria that Haines was abducted by ISIS representatives in March of last year, near the Turkish border. While his colleagues and the military attempted to organize his rescue, his family in Scotland went through challenging times. Last year, his 17-year-old daughter expressed her pain through several social media posts. She later revealed her plan to take a year off from work and education to work in third-world countries, inspired by her father's experience, which made him a true hero in her eyes. The girl longs for her father's return more than anything in the world.

Current Situation and Global Response

After David Haines was identified as a captive in one of the videos of the notorious Islamic terrorist known as Jihadi John, military forces and intelligence agencies around the world became active. World leaders are now eager to launch a series of serious strikes against these terrorists. Haines is not the only prisoner in their hands; Jihadi John has already murdered at least two hostages, journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff.
