Childhood and Early Military Career

Born into a noble family in the Tula province, Nikolai Chistyakov joined the Russian military at the tender age of 10.He enlisted as a sergeant in the prestigious Preobrazhensky Life Guards Regiment and was later promoted to cornet in 1797.

Napoleonic Wars

Chistyakov played a significant role in the Napoleonic Wars.As a lieutenant colonel in the Cavalry Guards Regiment, he participated in the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805 and fought in the battles of Heilsberg and Friedland during the 1806-1807 campaign. For his bravery at Friedland, he was awarded the Order of Saint George, 4th class.

Campaigns of 1812-1813

During the 1812 invasion of Russia, Chistyakov commanded the Dragoon Guards Regiment.He fought in numerous battles, including Vilkomir, Vitebsk, Smolensk, and Borodino. In the aftermath of the French retreat, he joined General Dorokhov's partisan detachment and earned further distinction in the Battle of Krasnoye, earning the Order of Saint George, 3rd class.

In 1813, Chistyakov participated in the battles of Lützen, Bautzen, Kulm, and Leipzig.Despite sustaining a saber wound to the cheek at Leipzig, he recovered and continued to fight in the Battle of Fère-Champenoise and the capture of Paris.

Post-War Career

After the Napoleonic Wars, Chistyakov remained in command of the Dragoon Guards Regiment and later commanded a brigade in the Light Guards Cavalry Division.He was promoted to general-adjutant in 1825 and lieutenant general in 1826.

Chistyakov fought in the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829 and commanded the Guards Corps during the Polish uprising of 1831.He was appointed to the personal staff of Emperor Nicholas I in 1833 and was promoted to general of cavalry in 1834.

Legacy

Nikolai Chistyakov passed away in 1834 and was buried in the Troitse-Sergiyeva Primorsky Desert.His bravery and leadership in battle earned him numerous accolades and a place in Russian military history.
