David L. Hawk: American Management, Architectural, and Environmental Scholar
Early Life and Education
David L. Hawk (born 1948) earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Iowa State University in 1971, his Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974, and his PhD (Systems Science) from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, under the supervision of Eric Trist in 1979. His doctoral dissertation focused on the regulation of environmental hazards.
Pre-Academic Career
Before his academic career commenced in 1974, Hawk worked six years in industry, including serving in the United States Army in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968. From 1968 to 1974, he held various positions, including as a Construction Engineer in Loudon, an Architectural Designer in Darmstadt, Germany, and a Farm Manager in Brighton, Iowa. He also managed building design and development for Westminster City Council in London, England, from 1971 to 1972. From 1972 to 1974, he was a Design Engineer and Corporate Researcher for several public and private organizations in the Philadelphia area.
Academic Appointments
Appointed as a Research Fellow at the Wharton School in 1974, Hawk was a Visiting Scholar and Lecturer at the Stockholm School of Economics from 1975 to 1977 and from 1978 to 1981 as an Associate Professor at Iowa State University in its Colleges of Engineering and Design, where he supervised the graduate program in Architecture. In 1981, he began his tenure at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).
From 1981 to 2000, Hawk held the positions of Professor of Management in NJIT's School of Management and Professor of Architecture in its College of Architecture and Design. From 2006 to 2008, he served as Dean of NJIT's School of Management. He also held appointments at the Helsinki University of Technology (1998-1999) and the Institute of International Business, SSE (2006-2008).
Government and Industry Contributions
From 1994 to 1996, Hawk worked for AT&T developing new models for industrial design to mitigate environmental impacts and enhance sustainability. In 2004, he served on the Committee for Business Strategy at the National Academy of Sciences. He also served as a Senior Advisor to China State Construction, a major Chinese construction firm.
Recognition and Publications
In 2001, Hawk was awarded the title of Distinguished Professor at NJIT. He authored two books, "Building Economics Research Agenda" and "Investments in Federal Facilities," in addition to his doctoral dissertation and numerous scholarly articles.
