Biography of David Macmillan
Early Life and EducationDavid Macmillan is a British-American organic chemist specializing in organic synthesis and asymmetric organocatalysis. Born in Scotland, he completed his undergraduate studies in chemistry at the University of Glasgow in 1991.
Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Research
Macmillan pursued his doctoral research under Professor Larry E. Overman at the University of California, Irvine, from 1990. Subsequently, he held a postdoctoral fellowship with Professor David A. Evans at Harvard University from 1996.
Academic Career
Macmillan commenced his independent career as an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley in 1998. In 2000, he joined the California Institute of Technology as an Associate Professor and became an Earle C. Anthony Professor of Chemistry in 2004.
In 2006, Macmillan moved to Princeton University as the A. Barton Hepburn Professor of Chemistry. He served as Chair of the Department of Chemistry from 2010 to 2015 and is currently the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry.
Scientific Collaborations and Honors
Macmillan is a scientific consultant for various pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, including Merck, Amgen, and Gilead Research Laboratories. He is also a member of the scientific advisory boards of Firmenich and Kadmon Pharmaceuticals.
Macmillan's contributions to chemistry have been recognized with numerous prestigious honors, including election to the London Royal Society (2012), the National Academy of Sciences (2018), and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2013). He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2012).
Chiromics LLC and Chemical Science
In 2003, Macmillan cofounded Chiromics LLC, a company specializing in enantioselective catalysis. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of Chemical Science from 2009 to 2014.
