Biography of David Makhateli

David Makhateli, a ballet dancer, began his career in his hometown of Tbilisi, Georgia, when he enrolled in the ballet school at the age of 10. Coming from a family of dancers, with his father, mother, and grandfather all involved in the professional ballet world, it was only natural for David to pursue a career in dance. He trained extensively at the Vakhtang Chabukiani Tbilisi Choreographic School and later, after winning the Prix de Lausanne competition in Switzerland, at the Royal Ballet School in London.

International Career

David's career flourished when he won a scholarship to train in England, leading to opportunities with the Dutch National Ballet and ultimately an invitation from Ben Stevenson, the director of the Houston Ballet, to join the company as a principal dancer in 2005. He spent seven successful years with the Houston Ballet, but when Stevenson stepped down as director, David felt it was time to move on to a larger company. His invitation to perform the role of Des Grieux in MacMillan's "Manon" at the Royal Ballet in London came at the perfect moment. This marked the start of his career as a principal dancer with the prestigious English company in 2003.

Repertoire and Achievements

David Makhateli's extensive repertoire includes leading roles in classical ballets such as "Sleeping Beauty," "Swan Lake," "Romeo and Juliet," "Giselle," "Don Quixote," "The Nutcracker," "La Bayadere," and "Onegin," among many others. He has also performed in neoclassical works by Forsythe and Nacho Duato. David is a laureate of international ballet competitions including the Diaghilev Ballet Competition in Moscow, the Paris International Ballet Competition, and the Prix de Lausanne.

Artistic Growth and Future Plans

Throughout his career, David Makhateli has evolved as an artist, focusing not only on technical mastery but also on conveying the emotional depth of his characters. He has found particular fulfillment in dramatic roles, such as Onegin in John Cranko's ballet and Des Grieux in Kenneth MacMillan's "Manon." David has also explored his passion for producing, organizing galas and concerts, and hopes to create his own ballet company one day to provide opportunities for young dancers.

Personal Life

David's wife, Natalia, is also a ballet dancer and both have had the chance to perform together on tour. While they currently reside in London, their future plans are uncertain, as the life of a dancer is unpredictable. They consider Monte Carlo their favorite vacation spot and would be happy to live and work there if the opportunity arises. David has a special connection to the city, as it was there that he found support and guidance during his early career. Monte Carlo holds cherished memories and dear friends for him.
