He then attended Duke University, where he graduated with honors in 1970. Rubinstein obtained a law degree from the University of Chicago Law School.

Rubinstein began his career as an advisor to President Jimmy Carter. He also worked in private legal practice in Washington, D.C. Later, he co-founded the Carlyle Group, an investment firm.
