Biography of David Shapiro
David Shapiro is an American economist and professor at Pennsylvania State University. He joined the faculty of the university's economics department in 1980. Currently, David Shapiro is a leading global expert in the field of economic demography. In addition to his research and teaching activities, Dr. Shapiro heads the advanced economics program and serves as one of the directors of the undergraduate program at the School of Economics.
Early Life and Education
David Shapiro grew up in the outskirts of New York City and graduated from Irvington High School in 1964. He studied economics and political science at the University of Michigan and earned his master's degree in economics from Princeton University in 1972, specializing in labor economics and demography. These areas of study greatly influenced the direction of his career.
Academic Career
In the 1970s, Shapiro taught at Ohio State University, focusing his early research on studying various groups such as women, youth, and the elderly in the United States labor market. After moving to Pennsylvania State University in 1980, Shapiro began participating in research projects in African regions south of the Sahara, which eventually became the main focus of his research.
Starting from the late 1980s, Shapiro made frequent trips to Africa, primarily to Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where he worked on a long-term project focusing on women's education, employment, and fertility. This research led to the publication of the book "Kinshasa in Transition: Women's Education, Employment, and Fertility," co-authored with Basile O. Tambashe.
In the spring of 2004, Shapiro received a Fulbright grant and spent the 2004-2005 academic year at the University of Kinshasa, where he continued his research and taught. Apart from his research, Shapiro actively contributes to the undergraduate program at Pennsylvania State University, teaching several courses such as principles of economics, intermediate microeconomic theory, and field courses in labor economics and demography. In recent years, his teaching activities have focused on advanced seminars in general economics, discrimination economics, and economic demography, as well as coordination work within the School of Economics.
Personal Life
In his free time, David Shapiro enjoys taking walks with his dog Odie, fishing, and playing basketball. Additionally, he is an avid music lover and possesses an extensive collection of music from around the world.
