The Fatal Night
On October 18, 2009, an argument between David and Dawn Viens escalated into violence. David, suspecting his wife of stealing from their restaurant, physically assaulted her, taped her mouth shut, and left her to sleep. Upon waking, he discovered Dawn had suffocated.
A Desperate Attempt at Concealment
Panicked, David resorted to a macabre plan. Being a chef, he placed Dawn's body in a 66-gallon barrel of water and boiled it relentlessly for four days, dissolving her flesh into pieces. He disposed of some remains in the trash and buried others in a hole near his restaurant.
Haunted by Guilt
Despite his efforts, David kept a morbid memento: Dawn's skull, which he hid in his mother's house. Unable to bear the weight of guilt, he attempted suicide in March 2011 by leaping from a 79-foot cliff in Rancho Palos Verdes.
Confession and Legal Proceedings
David's failed suicide attempt led to his confession to the police. In court, he was initially charged with first-degree murder, carrying a possible life sentence. However, the judge amended the charge to second-degree murder, leaving the jury to decide between murder and manslaughter. The sentencing was scheduled for November 27, with David facing a possible prison term of 15 years to life.
