Debbie Bird, a British woman suffering from a rare condition called electromagnetic hypersensitivity, made it into the Guinness World Records for her unique allergy to electromagnetic fields. Born in the United Kingdom, Debbie is now forty years old and has spent a significant portion of her life protecting herself from the harmful effects of modern high-tech devices.

A Life of Challenges

Debbie's condition is triggered instantly by close contact with mobile phones, microwave ovens, computers, and other modern technological gadgets. Each of these devices causes her to develop a severe skin rash and serious eyelid swelling (her eyelids triple in size during an episode). To live a full life, Debbie and her forty-five-year-old husband, Tony, have transformed their home into a true oasis.

The walls of their house are painted with a special carbon paint, the windows are coated with protective film, and the bed is covered with a silver mosquito net that effectively shields Debbie from radio waves. Despite the measures they have taken, Debbie still faces significant challenges in her daily life.

Acceptance and Limitations

Today, Debbie has come to accept her condition as a part of her life, although she sometimes regrets the many things she cannot enjoy. For example, her home does not and will never have a microwave oven, cell phones or wireless devices, computers, or internet access. These are all items that many individuals cannot imagine their lives without. Debbie only drives her own car, which is devoid of anything that could trigger her allergies. Other vehicles, like her friend's BMW filled with all possible communication devices, are strictly off-limits for her. Even a short time spent in such a car will provoke severe headaches, tingling sensations, burning, rashes, and swelling for Debbie.

A Life-Changing Move

Debbie first experienced symptoms of her illness when she, her husband, and their daughter Antonia moved into a well-appointed apartment in Boudene, Greater Manchester. Her reaction to high-tech devices prompted the family to quickly leave their new home and find another one that could be adapted to Debbie's needs. The couple had to spend a considerable amount of money to fully protect their new residence from harmful radiation for Debbie. Sadly, doctors have been unable to offer much help. They claim that there is currently little data available on Debbie's condition. Only five hundred people suffer from this illness at present, but unfortunately, this number is expected to rise significantly in the near future.
