Biography of Debbie Reynolds

Debbie Reynolds, born Mary Frances Reynolds on April 1, 1932, in El Paso, Texas, was an American actress, singer, and dancer. She grew up in Burbank, California, where her family moved in 1939. Reynolds attended John Burroughs High School, where she developed a love for sports and dreamed of becoming a physical education teacher.

Early Career and Singing in the Rain

At the age of sixteen, Reynolds won the Miss Burbank beauty pageant and caught the attention of Warner Brothers, who offered her a film contract. She went on to appear in several comedy films, but her most famous role came in 1952 when she starred in the musical "Singin' in the Rain," showcasing her incredible vocal abilities. In 1951, her song "Aba Daba Honeymoon" reached the third spot on the music charts.

The Unsinkable Molly Brown and Later Career

In 1964, Reynolds received an Oscar nomination for her role in the musical "The Unsinkable Molly Brown." She continued to act in films such as "The Singing Nun" (1966) and "Divorce American Style" (1967). In the following years, Reynolds transitioned to episodic roles in numerous TV series. In 1969, she became the host of her own television show, "A Visit with Debbie Reynolds," which earned her a Golden Globe nomination in 1970. Despite its popularity, the show was canceled the following year. Reynolds received her second Golden Globe nomination in 1996 for her role in the film "Mother."

Later Life and Personal Life

From 1999 to 2006, Reynolds had a prominent role in the TV series "Will & Grace." In November 2006, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to the film industry. In May 2007, she was honored with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Nevada. Reynolds has been married three times. Her first marriage was to singer Eddie Fisher in 1955, with whom she had a daughter named Carrie and a son named Todd. They divorced in 1959 following a highly publicized scandal involving Fisher and Elizabeth Taylor. She then married millionaire Harry Karl from 1960 to 1973. Her third husband was real estate agent Richard Hamlett.
