Debora Serracchiani
Early Life and Legal CareerDebora Serracchiani was born in Rome, Italy, on November 10, 1970. She holds a law degree and practiced at law firms in Udine, including Businello, Virgilio, and De Toma.
Political Ascent
Serracchiani was elected to the Udine Municipal Council and subsequently to the Udine Provincial Council in 2006 and 2008, representing the Democrats of the Left. In 2008, she became the head of the Democratic Party (PD) in Udine.
In 2009, Serracchiani gained national and international attention for criticizing party leadership at a PD assembly. She led the PD list in the 2009 European Parliament elections in the North-East constituency, defeating Silvio Berlusconi by 9,000 votes.
Governorship of Friuli-Venezia Giulia
From 2013 to 2018, Serracchiani served as the Governor of the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. She led a left-wing coalition that included the PD, Italy of Values, Left Ecology Freedom, and the Slovenian Union.
Parliamentary Career
In 2018, Serracchiani announced her intention to run for the Chamber of Deputies instead of seeking a second gubernatorial term. She lost in the Trieste constituency but entered Parliament through the PD's proportional representation list.
Party Leadership
In 2019, Serracchiani became one of the Deputy Chairs of the PD, following the National Assembly that elected Nicola Zingaretti as the party's National Secretary.
Presidency of the PD Chamber of Deputies Faction
On March 30, 2021, Serracchiani was elected President of the PD faction in the Chamber of Deputies, receiving 66 votes compared to 24 for her opponent, Marianna Madia.
