Édouard Philippe

Early Life and Education

Édouard Philippe, a French politician, was born on November 28, 1970, in Rouen, France. He earned his degree from the prestigious Institut d'études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) in 1992 and the École nationale d'administration (ENA) in 1996.

Early Career

Philippe began his career at the French Council of State, specializing in public procurement. During his studies at Sciences Po, he joined the Socialist Party and campaigned for former Prime Minister Michel Rocard. However, his political views gradually shifted to the right.

Local and Regional Politics

In 2001, Philippe was elected to the city council of Le Havre on Antoine Rufenacht's right-wing list. After the list's victory, he became one of the city's deputy mayors. He unsuccessfully ran for the National Assembly in 2002 but was actively involved in the creation of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) party.

In 2008, Philippe was elected to the General Council of Seine-Maritime as a councilor for the canton of Le Havre-5. He also served as a deputy mayor of Le Havre, initially responsible for economic development and the port, then later for urban planning, infrastructure, and port development. In 2010, he became mayor of Le Havre after Rufenacht's resignation.

National Politics

From 2012 to 2017, Philippe was a member of the National Assembly for the 7th constituency of Seine-Maritime. In March 2014, he led the right-wing list in the municipal elections in Le Havre and retained his position as mayor.

Premiership

In May 2017, President Emmanuel Macron appointed Philippe as Prime Minister of France. Philippe formed a government and played a key role in the 2017 parliamentary elections, which saw the Socialists lose their majority in the National Assembly. Macron asked Philippe to form a new government, which was announced in late June 2017.

Philippe was a popular figure, consistently polling higher than Macron. However, he resigned as Prime Minister in July 2020 to return to Le Havre as mayor.

Post-Premiership

After stepping down as Prime Minister, Philippe was elected president of the Le Havre Seine Métropole in July 2020. In October 2020, he joined the board of directors of Atos, a French multinational information technology company.

In October 2021, Philippe launched Horizons, a political party aimed at supporting President Macron from the right.

Honors and Awards

Philippe has received several honors and awards, including the Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor and the Grand Cross of the National Order of Merit.
