Hayat Mohamed Dekha: A Tireless Advocate for Peace and Reconciliation
Early Life and Family- Born in Wajir in 1964 to Somali parents
- Married to Dr. Hassan Nurrow Abdurrahman, had four children
- Divorced in 2007 and remarried Abdinur in 2009
Career and Advocacy
- Played a pivotal role in the Coalition for Peace in Africa (COPA) and the Wajir Peace and Development Committee
- Co-founded the NOMADIC pastoralist organization, ACTION, and the Oasis of Peace and Restoration (PRO)
- Served as a consultant on peacebuilding and pastoralist development for numerous organizations in Africa and beyond
- Authored "Mediation and Governance in Fragile Contexts: Small Steps to Peace" in 2019
- Delivered numerous workshops and trainings on mediation and conflict resolution
Awards and Recognition
- Received the Right Livelihood Award in 2007 for her efforts in bridging religious and cultural divides
- Honored with the Guernica Peace Prize in 2008 and the Hessian Peace Prize in 2009
Tragic Death
- On July 7, 2011, Dekha, her husband Abdinur, and their driver were killed in a car accident while en route to a peace conference
- Dekha sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to Nairobi's Aga Khan Hospital
- She passed away on July 14, 2011, at the age of 47, leaving behind a legacy of peace and reconciliation
