Education and Career Beginnings
Emma Bonino was born in Bra, Italy on March 9, 1948. She graduated from Bocconi University in Milan in 1972 with a degree in Modern Languages and Literature.
Activism and Political Engagement
In 1975, Bonino co-founded the Information Center on Sterilization and Abortion. She was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies in 1976 as a member of the Radical Party, becoming the party's floor leader and executive.
European Parliament and Transnational Radical Party
From 1979 to 2006, Bonino served as a Member of the European Parliament. In 1989, she became president of the Transnational Radical Party, a position she held until 1993.
Electoral Success and European Commission
In 1994, Bonino's electoral list received 2.1% of the vote in the European Parliament elections, securing two seats. In 1999, her list, under the name "Bonino List," won 8.5% of the vote, earning seven seats in the European Parliament. From 1995 to 1999, she held the position of European Commissioner for Fisheries, Humanitarian Aid, and Consumer Protection.
Second Prodi Government and Senate
From 2006 to 2008, Bonino served as Minister for European Affairs and International Trade in Romano Prodi's second government. In 2008, she was elected to the Italian Senate as a Radical but joined the Democratic Party group.
Non-Governmental Organizations
Bonino organized several non-governmental organizations, including "No Peace Without Justice," which campaigns against female genital mutilation, and "Hands Off Cain," which fights against capital punishment and torture.
Foreign Minister
In 2013, Bonino was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in Enrico Letta's government. She focused on promoting human rights and international justice. However, the Foreign Ministry faced financial constraints, leading to the closure of consulates and embassy staff reductions in Western countries.
Post-Government Life
After leaving office in 2014, Bonino founded the pro-European electoral list "+Europa" in 2017. In 2018, she was elected to the Senate. In 2015, she announced that she had been diagnosed with lung cancer but intended to continue her political career.
