Delfin Benitez Caceres: Paraguayan Legend of Argentine Football
Early Career: Libertad and International DebutDelfin Benitez Caceres, born on 24 September 1910 in Asuncion, Paraguay, began his football career with Club Libertad. Despite not showcasing exceptional skills or scoring prowess as a left-wing forward, Caceres caught the eye of the Paraguayan national team, debuting in 1929.
In 1930, he represented Paraguay in the inaugural FIFA World Cup, playing in a 1-0 victory against Belgium. However, after a defeat in their opening fixture, Paraguay was eliminated from the tournament.
Legendary Years with Boca Juniors
In 1932, Caceres joined Boca Juniors, having impressed while representing Paraguay in Buenos Aires in 1929. At Boca, he formed a renowned forward line alongside Francisco Varallo and Roberto Cherro.
Caceres played on Boca's iconic La Bombonera stadium for seven seasons, scoring 107 goals in 162 matches, making him the club's fifth-highest goalscorer of all time. During his time with "Los Xeneizes," he also donned the jersey of the Argentinian national team once, scoring a goal.
Post-Boca Career and Coaching Success
After leaving Boca, Caceres played for Racing Club de Avellaneda, where he won the Argentine championship's top goalscorer award in 1940 with 33 goals. He also played for Ferro Carril Oeste and Colombian side Sporting.
Upon retiring as a player, Caceres embarked on a coaching career, leading Independiente Medellin to the Colombian championship in 1955 and also managed Venezuelan teams.
