Early Life and Education
General Daniel J. Dailey was born in Flandreau, South Dakota, to a military family. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1971 and from Shippensburg University with a Master's degree in Public Administration in 1994.
Military Career
Dailey is a highly skilled aviator, having earned the distinction of Master Aviator in the United States Army with over 2400 flight hours, including 400 hours at night. He is also a Master Parachutist, having completed 120 jumps.
Throughout his career, Dailey served in various Special Operations Forces units including the 75th Ranger Regiment and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR). He commanded the 160th SOAR from 1994-1996.
Leadership Positions
Dailey held numerous leadership positions, including Deputy Commanding General of the 101st Airborne Division from 1996-1998. He led the Special Operations Command Europe from 1998-2000 and became the Commanding General of the US Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) from 2000-2003.
Deputy Commander of XVIII Airborne Corps
In 2003, Dailey became the Deputy Commanding General for Operations of XVIII Airborne Corps and Director of Operations Center for USASOC, where he played a critical role in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Special Operations Forces-Central
From 2005-2007, Dailey commanded the Special Operations Forces-Central, leading operations in both Afghanistan and Iraq.
Counterterrorism Efforts
Dailey's career culminated in his appointment as the Coordinator for Counterterrorism at the US Department of State from 2007-2009, where he held the rank of Ambassador-at-Large. In this role, he coordinated and supported the development and implementation of US government counterterrorism policies and programs abroad.
As a Senior Advisor to the Secretary of State for International Counterterrorism, Dailey played a leading role in developing a coordinated strategy to combat terrorism globally and in securing international partnerships.
