Early Life and Military Career

Vasily Petrovich Vasilyev was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia. In 1915, he joined the Imperial Russian Army as a cadet in the Oranienbaum School of Ensigncy and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1917. During World War I, he fought on the Southwestern Front and received the Order of Saint George 4th Class for his bravery as an ensign.

Russian Civil War and Interwar Period

In 1918, Vasilyev joined the Red Army and participated in the Russian Civil War, serving in various command and staff positions. Between 1923 and 1931, he held positions in the Leningrad Military District, including Assistant Chief of the 1st Rifle Corps. He graduated from the Reconnaissance Courses in 1927 and the Frunze Military Academy in 1933.

Pre-World War II Commands

From 1931 to 1935, Vasilyev commanded the 56th Rifle Division. In 1935, he became Chief of Staff of the 1st Rifle Corps. He later commanded the 24th Rifle Division (1937-1938) and the 45th Rifle Corps (1938).

World War II and Death

In September 1939, Vasilyev became Commander of the Northern Army Group. He was promoted to General Lieutenant in June 1940 and commanded the Special Rifle Corps in the Far East until June 1941. On June 19, 1941, he was appointed Commander of the 1st Red Banner Army, Far Eastern Front. The army did not participate in combat during World War II.

Vasily Petrovich Vasilyev passed away from illness in Ussuriysk on October 19, 1942. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner and the Medal "20 Years of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army" for his service.
