Biography of Den Harrow
Early Life and Musical InterestsDen Harrow, whose real name is Manuel Stefano Carey, was born on July 4, 1962, in Boston, USA. His father worked as an architect in the city. At the age of seven, Den developed an interest in playing the piano and guitar. However, he faced serious difficulties with the English language, which made it challenging for him to communicate with his peers. In 1967, Manuel's family moved to Milan, Italy, which was a hub of the music recording industry at the time. During his school years, Manuel's passion for music was combined with his love for sports. He even practiced judo and bodybuilding, and at the age of 18, he started attending a breakdance school.
Becoming a Model and Pursuing Music
Den's photogenic appearance, excellent physique, and strong desire to be involved in show business led him to become a successful fashion model. However, his true passion was singing. At one of the Milan nightclubs, he met the famous DJ Roberto Turatti, who decided to become Manuel's producer. It was then that he was given the stage name Den Harrow. Over the next year, the newly formed singer dedicated himself to vocal training. Shortly after, his first two songs, "To meet me" (1983) and "A taste of love" (1983), became popular in Italy, Spain, Greece, and even France. However, these were not official singles. His first official single, "Future brain," was released in 1985 and quickly made Den one of the most beloved disco stars in Europe.
Success and Controversy
Den Harrow's subsequent singles, such as "Bad Boy," "Charleston," and "Catch the fox," were also well-received by listeners. In 1985, he released his first album, "Overpower," which brought him immense success. The following year, Den was honored with the Silver Otto award from the renowned German music magazine Bravo for this album. In 1987, he received the Gold Otto award for the release of one of his most famous and best-hit songs, "Don't break my heart," which became a classic in the Italo-disco genre. Den performed this song during the Peter's Pop Show concert. He then released the album "Day by day." Den was also recognized as the sexiest man of the year, due to his appealing appearance, stylish clothing from top European designers, and his voice, which had become strong and clear through constant training.
However, rumors started to circulate that some of Den's hits were actually sung by a certain Tom Hooker, who was mentored by Roberto Turatti. These rumors were reinforced during Den's first live tour in 1987. On his album "Lies" (1989), Den's voice significantly differed from his previous recordings. Although it was not the first time that someone else sang for him, Den faced harsh criticism, attacks from detractors, and disappointment from many fans. Despite all of this, Den did not give up and traveled to England to continue his career, recording songs with his own voice.
Later Career and Current Status
In 1992, Den released his fourth album, "All I want is you," which was produced by Jennifer Rush and Natalie Cole. The album reached fourth place on the German charts and sold 800,000 copies. In 1993, he recorded the album "Real big love," produced by Natalie Cole. In 1996, Den's album "I, Den" was released, and this time he worked with the renowned producer Mauro Farina. Remixes of Den's old songs were also made. In 1999, his album "Back from the future" was released. The current whereabouts and career of one of the most interesting "disco" singers are unknown.
