Early Life and Education
Denis Bećirović was born on November 28, 1975, in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Tuzla in 1998. In 2000, he enrolled in postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Sarajevo. In 2004, he defended his master's thesis, and in 2010, he defended his doctoral dissertation at the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo.
Political Career
Early Political InvolvementBećirović joined the Social Democratic Party in 1993 and held several positions within the party. Before entering politics, he worked as a history teacher in an elementary school in Tuzla. From 1998 to 2002, he worked at the High School of Economics in his hometown.
Parliament and Government Positions
In 1998, Bećirović became a member of the Federal Parliament. Two years later, in the 2000 general elections, he entered the Cantonal Assembly of Tuzla and the Federal House of Peoples.
In the 2002 general elections, Bećirović was reelected to the Cantonal Assembly. Four years later, in the 2006 general elections, he became a member of the national House of Representatives. He also extended his term in the 2010 general elections. In the 2014 general elections, Bećirović won his third consecutive term in the national parliament.
Presidential Candidacy
In the 2018 general elections, Bećirović ran for President of Bosnia and Herzegovina as the Bosniak member but was not elected. He received 33.53% of the votes, while Šefik Džaferović of the Party of Democratic Action was elected with 36.61% of the votes. In February 2019, after the elections, Bećirović was appointed a member of the National House of Peoples.
Presidency (2022–Present)
The three-party liberal coalition of the Social Democratic Party, Our Party, and the People and Justice party, also supported by the Union for a Better Future and the People's European Union, nominated Bećirović in the 2022 Bosnian general elections to run once again for the Presidency member representing the Bosniaks.
In the general elections held on October 2, 2022, he was elected President, winning 57.37% of the votes. The candidate of the Party of Democratic Action and former President of Bosnia, Bakir Izetbegović, came second with 37.25%.
Personal Life
Denis Bećirović is married to Mirela Bećirović, and they have two children. They reside in Tuzla.
