Early Career and International Debut
Carlos Gamarra is a retired Paraguayan footballer who played as a defender. He began his professional career with Olimpia in 1994 and quickly became a regular member of the Paraguayan national team, making his debut in 1996.
World Cup Appearances
Gamarra was a key player for Paraguay, participating in four World Cups: 1998, 2002, 2006, and 2010. He also represented his country in two Copa América tournaments in 1999 and 2001.
Club Career
After a successful stint with Olimpia, Gamarra moved to the Argentine club Lanús in 1999. He later played for several Mexican teams, including Pachuca, Cruz Azul, and Tigres. In 2008, he returned to Olimpia and won the Clausura championship in 2009, before moving to Nacional, where he helped the club win its first trophy in 63 years.
Return to the National Team
Gamarra initially retired from international football after the 2006 World Cup but returned in 2007 at the invitation of new national team coach Gerardo Martino. His versatility, allowing him to play both as a center-back and in midfield, made him a valuable asset to the team.
Later Career
In 2010, Gamarra moved to Mexican club León, where he enjoyed the final years of his playing career. He officially retired from professional football in 2011.
