Istomin comes from a tennis-loving family, with his mother, Klavdia, being his coach and his father, Oleg, involved in business. He has a younger brother named Anton.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Istomin started playing tennis at the age of five and quickly showed promise in the sport. However, his early career was interrupted when he was involved in a serious car accident in 2001. He suffered a broken leg and spent three and a half months in the hospital, casting doubt on his future in tennis. Nonetheless, Istomin returned to training and competition in 2004.

In his first year back, Istomin won his debut doubles title in the Futures series. By 2005, he had stabilized his game and broke into the top 200 in the singles rankings.
