After graduating from Emerson College in Boston, where he first explored acting and writing, Leary began his career as an English literature professor at the same college. However, his passion for acting led him to perform in comedy clubs in Boston, where he gained popularity for his satirical portrayal of average citizens and his humorous take on political and social issues.

Leary's career expanded beyond Boston, and he toured nationally across the United States. Eventually, he settled in New York City, where he received an offer to host a show on MTV. His controversial show, titled "Merry F#%$in' Christmas," garnered attention and led to his projects being shown late at night on television. Similarly, his album, "Asshole," containing provocative jokes, faced bans in several places but sold millions of copies where allowed.

Throughout his career, Leary has appeared in over fifty films, primarily in comedic roles. Some notable films include "The Sandlot," "The Matchmaker," "The Ref," "Suicide Kings," "Wag the Dog," "Final," "Bad Boy," and "The Secret Lives of Dentists." His natural comedic talent, improvisation skills, and ability to bring laughter to audiences have made his involvement in films a guarantee of comedic success.

In 1982, while still working as a professor, Leary married his former student named Anne, and they have two children together. During a trip to London in 1990, their son was born, and this period also marked the creation of one of Leary's shows. While his wife was in the hospital, Leary wrote a comedy play, "No Cure for Cancer," and invited his friends from the United States to help with the music and songs. The play debuted at the Edinburgh International Festival, receiving critical acclaim despite controversy surrounding its title.

Aside from his creative pursuits, Leary has also shown himself to be an entrepreneur. He has written books, released albums, and produced videos and audio cassettes. Later in his career, he earned numerous award nominations, including Emmy and Satellite Awards, winning five of them. In 2005, Emerson College awarded Leary the title of Honorary Professor.

An interesting aspect of Leary's life is that he is the second cousin of television host Conan O'Brien. Furthermore, Leary's cousin, Jeremiah Lucey, was one of six firefighters who died in a warehouse fire in Worcester. In memory of Lucey and other fallen firefighters, Leary established the Leary Firefighters Foundation.

Denis Leary's talent for comedy and his ability to captivate audiences with his humor and sharp wit have solidified his status as a multi-talented entertainer in the entertainment industry.
