Early Life and Career

Denis Nizhegorodov is a Russian racewalker who made a name for himself in the sport at the age of 18. Coached by Viktor Mikhailovich Chegin, he has achieved great success, including a world record in the 50-kilometer racewalk.

Olympic Success

Nizhegorodov's breakthrough came at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Despite the scorching heat, he persevered and finished second to Robert Korzeniowski of Poland in the 50km racewalk. Four years later, at the Beijing Olympics, he took home the bronze medal, finishing behind Alex Schwazer and Jared Tallent.

World Record and Retirement

On May 11, 2008, Nizhegorodov set a new world record in the 50km racewalk at the World Cup in Cheboksary. His time of 3 hours 34 minutes 14 seconds smashed the previous record by over a minute and a half. In 2013, Nizhegorodov announced his retirement from athletics.
