Early Life and Education
American Conductor and PianistD.R. Davis, an American conductor and pianist, is known for his specialization in 20th-century music. He studied at the Juilliard School and played a pivotal role in establishing the American Composers Orchestra, which solely focuses on American compositions.
Orchestras and Positions
Pioneering Orchestral LeadershipFrom 1972 to 1980, Davis led the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, earning a 1980 Grammy Award for their recording of Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring. Simultaneously, he co-founded the American Composers Orchestra, where he served as music director until 2002.
Brooklyn Philharmonic and European Success
Davis also led the Brooklyn Philharmonic (1990-1996), emphasizing contemporary music under Joseph Horowitz's programming. Since 1980, Davis has been active in Europe, including serving as General Music Director of Stuttgart (1980-1987), where he premiered Philip Glass's operas. He subsequently led the Beethovenhalle Orchestra Bonn (1987-1995) and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (1996-2002).

Currently, Davis leads the Bruckner Orchestra Linz (since 2002) and the Basel Symphony Orchestra (since 2009). As a pianist, he often performs with pianist Maki Namekawa.

Haydn Symphony Project
In 2010, Davis and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra released a complete set of Haydn's 106 symphonies, making him the fourth conductor to complete this ambitious project. While some critics praised the recordings, others noted a lack of humor in certain performances.
