Denny Morrison: Canada's Olympic Speed Skating Champion and World Record Holder

Denny Morrison

Early Life and Career

Denny Morrison, a renowned Canadian speed skater, first stepped onto the ice at the tender age of three. Initially pursuing both short track and long track skating, he later focused exclusively on the latter from 2003 onwards.

Olympic and World Success

At the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Morrison etched his name in history by claiming a silver medal in the team pursuit. He followed this triumph with a World Cup victory in the same event that year. The next season witnessed Morrison's exceptional performance at the World Single Distance Championships, where he secured three medals: silver in the 1000m and team pursuit, and bronze in the 1500m.

World Championship Victories

Morrison's career reached new heights in 2007/2008 when he became the World Champion in the 1500m and finished third in the 1000m. He also achieved podium finishes in the 1000m and team pursuit at the World Cup. In 2009, he added another silver in the 1000m and a bronze in the 1500m at the World Championships, along with a second World Cup gold in the team pursuit.

Vancouver Olympics and Injury

The 2010 Vancouver Olympics proved to be a golden moment for Morrison, as he captured the Olympic gold medal in the team pursuit alongside teammates Mathieu Giroux and Lucas Makowsky. However, the following season brought a string of setbacks, as he failed to reach the podium at the World Championships and achieved only two podium finishes in World Cup events.

Regaining Dominance and World Record

Morrison reemerged as a formidable force in 2012, securing his second World Championship title in the 1500m. He began the 2012/2013 season with a victory in the 1000m at the opening World Cup event. However, a skiing accident in December 2012 resulted in a broken leg, sidelining him for much of the Olympic qualifying season.

World Record Holder

Morrison holds the distinction of being a former world record holder in the 1500m. On March 14, 2008, at a World Cup event in Calgary, he shattered Erben Wennemars's previous record by completing the distance in 1.42.01. This record stood for over a year before Shani Davis set a new mark of 1.41.80 in Salt Lake City on March 6, 2009.
