Derek Chauvin: A Life of Controversy
Early Life and CareerDerek Chauvin was born on March 19, 1976, in Cottage Grove, Minnesota. He attended Park High School and pursued culinary studies at a technical college. Chauvin worked as a cook at McDonald's and an Italian-American restaurant, a security guard, and a military police officer in the United States Army. In 2006, he graduated from Metropolitan State University with a degree in law enforcement.
George Floyd Murder
On May 25, 2020, responding to a report of counterfeit bills, police officers in Minneapolis, including Chauvin, encountered George Floyd. According to police reports, Floyd was in a vehicle and "under the influence." After resisting arrest, Floyd was restrained on the ground by Chauvin, who pressed his knee against Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. Despite Floyd's pleas of "Please" and "I can't breathe," Chauvin maintained his position.
Aftermath and Trial
Floyd's death sparked widespread protests and a national outcry against police brutality. Chauvin was fired from the police department and charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. In a high-profile trial, a jury found Chauvin guilty of all charges. He was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison.
