Derek Derenalagi is a British athlete, a former soldier, a Paralympian, and a discus thrower.

Early Life and Military Service

Derek was born in Nakavu Village, Nadi, Fiji, and was raised by his grandmother. He developed a passion for sports in his youth, initially playing rugby before transitioning to athletics and specifically discus throwing. In 1999, Derek joined the British Army, and he quickly proved himself to be an excellent soldier, like many others from his island.

Tragic Injury and Recovery

In July 2007, Derek was serving in Afghanistan when his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device. Initially pronounced dead at the camp, medics later discovered he still had a pulse. Unfortunately, Derek's injuries were severe, and both his legs had to be amputated above the knees. He emerged from a coma in a hospital in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Turning Point and Paralympic Career

Derek's life took a new direction when he participated in the Ministry of Defence's "Battle Back" program, which was supported by the charitable project "Help for Heroes." As part of this program, he underwent training at the United States Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California. This training opened up new opportunities for Derek, and he decided to pursue a career in Paralympic sports. He competes in the F57 category.

Paralympic Achievements

Derek made his Paralympic debut in 2012 in London, competing in discus throwing. He achieved 11th place in his first competition, and later that year, he won gold in discus throwing at the IPC Athletics European Championships in the Netherlands. This victory came in the final round when Derek threw the discus 41.41 meters, earning a total of 826 points. He surpassed the Russian record-holder Alexey Ashapatov, who secured 795 points with his final throw of 46.85 meters. Derek also represented the British Paralympic team in the 2012 Paralympic Games, where he finished 11th overall in discus throwing.

Life Beyond Sports

Aside from his achievements in athletics, Derek is also known as a motivational speaker. He regularly delivers speeches at schools, charity events, and various corporate gatherings throughout the country. His speeches primarily focus on goal achievement and overcoming life's challenges. Derek is officially represented by the speakers' group "Military Speakers." Additionally, he is considering a career as a fitness instructor. Despite his life-altering injury, Derek speaks calmly and does not regret sacrificing his legs while serving his country and pursuing his passion. Today, he regularly performs in front of large crowds, and the emotional support he receives from the audience is a rewarding result of his hard work and dedication.
