Early Life and Family Background
Born into a Fashion LegacyDerek Lam was born in San Francisco, California, to Chinese ancestry. As the youngest of three children, Lam is a fifth-generation American. His parents owned an Asian import clothing store, while his grandparents successfully operated a wedding dress factory. From a young age, Lam spent time surrounded by seamstresses and was fascinated by the intricate craftsmanship of bridal gowns.
Education and Early Career
Pursuing Design in New YorkLam graduated from the Parsons School of Design in 1990. In the early 1990s, he became an assistant to renowned designer Michael Kors, where he worked for four years. After leaving Kors, Lam moved to Hong Kong and gained experience working for a global merchandising company.
The Michael Kors Years
Vice President of Kors LineReturning to New York, Lam joined Michael Kors as Vice President of Design for the Kors line. This experience provided him with invaluable knowledge and honed his design skills.
The Debut of His Own Label
Launch of Derek Lam CollectionIn 2003, Lam launched his eponymous label, Derek Lam Collection. His inaugural show debuted at New York Fashion Week in September of that year.
