Dhanaya Ravi: The 'Glass Woman'
A Life of FragilityDhanaya Ravi, an Indian woman, has been living with osteogenesis imperfecta, a rare genetic condition that makes her bones incredibly fragile. With over 300 fractures throughout her life, even the slightest movement can pose a risk of injury. As she wakes up each morning, Dhanaya braces herself, knowing that a simple act like getting out of bed could result in a broken bone.

Childhood and Loneliness
Growing up, Dhanaya witnessed children running and playing from her window, feeling a deep sense of isolation due to her wheelchair-bound existence. "It was heartbreaking," she said. "Every time I tried to walk, my bones would snap. I would even fracture while getting out of bed." Dhanaya found solace in video games and playing with Barbie dolls, finding inspiration in their strength and resilience.

Overcoming Isolation
Today, Dhanaya finds ways to combat her loneliness. She actively uses social media and enjoys spending time with her family and friends. "I've learned how to deal with the feeling of being an outsider," she said. "I'm not alone in this."

Medical Challenges
Despite her positive outlook, Dhanaya's condition comes with significant challenges. "The difficulties are not just the broken bones," she explained. "After repeated fractures, my bones become deformed, affecting the functioning of my internal organs."
Independence and Dependence
Dhanaya relies on her parents for assistance with her daily tasks, but she embraces this dependence. Her recent acquisition of a power wheelchair, which she affectionately calls her "BMW," has given her a sense of freedom and mobility.
Early Diagnosis and Support
Dhanaya's early diagnosis and access to specialized medical care have significantly improved her life. With the support of her doctors, who treated her "like a princess," she was able to pursue her education and pursue her passions.
Education and Art
Despite missing school due to her illness, Dhanaya was determined to complete her education. A dedicated neighbor provided home tutoring, instilling in Dhanaya the importance of helping others.
Advocacy and Awareness
Upon learning about another individual with osteogenesis imperfecta who needed surgery, Dhanaya took it upon herself to raise funds for his treatment. She has joined charitable organizations and participated in reality shows and quiz shows to raise awareness about the condition.
A Symbol of Resilience
Through her challenges and triumphs, Dhanaya serves as an inspiration to others. She has shattered the perception of disability and demonstrated that even with a fragile body, the human spirit can soar.
