Dharanindravarman I: A Khmer King of Note
King of the Khmer EmpireDharanindravarman I ascended to the throne of the Khmer Empire, following the untimely demise of his brother Jayavarman VI's presumptive heir in 1092. His claim to the throne was further strengthened by his marriage to Vijeyendralakshmi, Jayavarman VI's former wife.
Buddhism and the Court
Scholars believe that Dharanindravarman I's coronation played a significant role in officially bringing Buddhism to prominence within the Khmer court. This marked a departure from the previous influence of Hinduism.
Rise of Nripapatindavarman
Dharanindravarman I's reign saw the emergence of Nripapatindavarman, a direct descendant of King Harshavarman III. Nripapatindavarman would later overthrow Dharanindravarman I in 1112 and ascend the throne as King Suryavarman II.
Legacy and Posthumous Name
Dharanindravarman I's reign came to an end when he was overthrown by his grandnephew. After his death, he received the posthumous name "Paramanishkalapada," signifying his status as a revered ruler.
